This coming weekend is Bubonicon, the yearly science fiction convention in Albuquerque. The following weekend is LoneStarCon in San Antonio, the annual Worldcon. I will be attending both, doing readings, signings, panels, and other appearances.
Here’s my schedule, so if you happen to be attending either convention, you’ll be able to find me.
Friday, August 23
5pm, panel on MUTANT MADNESS: EXTRAORDINARY GENES RUN WILD
8:30PM, panel: THERE IS SUPERSTITION: CREATING BELIEFS
9:30pm, panel: MECHANICS OF TIME TRAVEL: AGAIN, HERE WE GO
(Three panels on Friday night! How did this happen?)
Saturday, August 24
11am: reading
1pm, panel: ASPIRING WRITERS: YOU’RE PUBLISHED, NOW WHAT?
5:20-6:30 PM MASS AUTOGRAPHING SESSION
And I seem to have no events on Sunday, which means I get to relax and hang with my friends. Which very possibly means you!

Wild Cards Reunion
Saturday 14:00 – 15:00
George RR Martin’s original shared alternate history universe, originally published in the 1980s introduced many great writers to the large public. Come find out what the alumni of the series have done since then.
Consensual Reality: Your Relationship to the World
Saturday 15:00 – 16:00
Google Glasses, augmented reality, kinetic gaming, tactile transmission systems. These and other new technologies are on the horizon to transmogrify sense and sensation. Google glasses are the first step to putting an overlay on the reality we see. This opens the door to hiding the ugly and changing what we see. When we do this socially it leads to possible consensual reality as in the works of Vinge, Schroeder and others. What will such capability mean in reality? Has science fiction explored the societal consequences?
Willie Siros: The Man, the Myth, the Legend
Saturday 20:00 – 21:00
The Solarcon 1 committee was Willie Siros. Is this where it all began?
The Twain Shall Meet: Samuel Clemens and SF/F
Sunday 11:00 – 12:00
Mark Twain published fantasy and (arguably) science fiction. Then there is the alternate Mark Twain…
As You Know, Jim…
Sunday 15:00 – 16:00
Exposition is never easy. How can writers communicate the details of a setting, magical system or incredible scientific breakthrough without losing half their audience? What makes a readers eyes glaze over and how do you avoid it?
How to Write a Novel
Monday 11:00 – 12:00
Five pros do a Q&A session where you can ask all your questions about how to write novels–including subplots, structure, and increasing tension. Learn techniques to improve your writing.
Autographing: Yasser Bahjatt, Mark FInn, Susan Krinard, Walter Jon WIlliams
Monday 13:00 – 14:00
*sigh* Hilde and I had to skip Bubonicon again this year. I think it’s been about eight years since last time we made it. (Varied reasons: health, finances, job changes.)
Hope everyone there has a good time. It’s always been a great little convention. Maybe next year we’ll finally make it again.
