I don’t say this lightly: This is Not a Game by Walter Jon Williams is one of the best novels I’ve read recently.

Strange Horizons has an excellent review of it too.
I got my copy today. It is sitting on my desk, just… staring at me, while I am supposed to be working. I have already crumpled once. Nice opening. 🙂
I bought it Friday, i cracked it open Tuesday at 2 PM, I finished it at 7 AM this morning (sleep in between).
It strikes me that it shares some obvious similarities or resonances with Charles Stross's Halting State (a character named Charlie, the "game world intersecting real world financially" angle, and even the title phrase). Plate-o-shrimp or deliberate?
Plate-o-shrimp. Or maybe steam engine. Take your pick.
Charlie Stross and I had some email correspondence when we figured out we were both working on gaming novels, but we figured we were safe since mine was about ARGs and his was about MMORPGs.
