Anvilstruck

by wjw on May 26, 2017

I’m continuing my prep for the worldcon by investigating Finnish culture, and I discovered this video by Steve’n’Seagulls, with their own interpretation of a modern classic.

Gotta love the anvil.  The accordion player with a dead animal on his head.  And the fact that, for the first time, I can actually understand the words.

Yep. It turns out there’s a whole “Thunderstruck” meme running on Youtube. Even one by “White Trash Washing Machine.”

But you might get a kick out of the cover by 2Cellos: https://youtu.be/uT3SBzmDxGk

Apparently they’ve been around for quite some time, but I only now discovered them.

Re: Finnish culture

I have a CD with Eläkeläiset.

Bought it after stumbling past the scene where they were playing at the Roskilde festival in Denmark, many, many years ago, and stopped up because I heard what sounded like a (very strange) version of Led Zeppelin’s “Black dog”…

Anarkistijenkka is still a favourite.

I so wish we felt like we had the money to go to Worldcon this year, but retirement happened before we were really ready for it. I look forward to hearing about it from you and others who are able to attend. Since I had already registered, I’m at least able to vote on the Hugos again.

James, my work here is done!

Steinar, Eläkeläiset is indeed very strange, and I hesitate to ask what a “humppa band” might be, especially given the tongue-in-cheek Tom of Finland-style artwork.

TRX, I also liked the 2 Cellos version of “Highway to Hell,” complete with guest appearance by Steve Vai.

Susan, very sorry you won’t be coming to Finland. Next year in San Jose?

I really like this version. I also like the fact that the original is not too far off the spirit of this remake. Unlike so many overly serious hard rock bands, AC/DC seem like the kind of guys who could have made something like the backyard Finnish version themselves.
