So last night I dreamed that I went fishing in the Jémez with Muddy Waters. Howlin’ Wolf and BB King were along, but I was mostly hanging with Muddy. He loaned me his Pocket Fisherman, and I pulled in some beautiful blue-and-gold butterfly fish, which is not exactly what you expect from a New Mexico mountain stream.
Muddy kept going off to liberate people who had been confined in a hospital for political reasons, but I wasn’t a part of that operation because I was in charge of fishing.
The whole time he had this beatific smile under his pencil mustache.
We continued hooking butterfly fish and liberating political prisoners till the phone rang and woke me up. Fucking phone.
So, to bring the dream back tonight, here’s Muddy Waters singing “Champagne & Reefer,” with harmonica played by Little Walter (no relation).
Do a little celebrating this weekend, why don’t’cha?
Thank the phone. If you had not woken up, you would not remember that dream. The cool thing is, you probably have dreams much like this one, several times a night.
I have always wondered, how much of a dream is created, when you dream it? How much, when you remember it for the first time?
Dude, I’m sorry, but I think you’re wrong. As far as I can tell, Muddy didn’t record this song until the late 70s, long after Little Walter died. The harp player is probably one of his long-time late career sidemen, Jerry Portnoy. Still a good tune, mind you.

Good dream.

Were they liberating Ali from the hospital? And if so, where were they taking him?
