After a few days of perfect springtime weather, winter descended again with wind and rain and cloud. Which made me long for the tropics, so I thought I’d check out the music scene on the island of Mauritius. (Which calls itself Maurice, by the way.)
I used to stream music from a radio station in Port Louis during the daytime here, when it was late at night in Mauritius (and so very few commercials). The DJs were as obnoxious as DJs everywhere, but the music— sega— was terrific, and seemed to encompass half the world. Soca beats, French accordion, African call-and-response, hip-hop, soul, lyrics sung in the local creole French. And the station from Réunion played music that had a somewhat different sound, but that sprang from a lot of the same sources.
I’ve never visited Maurice, but the music has always made me want to go.
You should go Port Louis is terrific and Grand Baie is a great place to base yourself for a dive holiday. Plus the local Phoenix beer is cheap and good, buy from the local shop as hotels are a rip off http://www.padi.com/blog/2012/12/12/diving-in-mauritius/
