Edible!
by wjw on May 6, 2015
My longtime friend Nadine Panache is a badass baker. For my birthday one year she created a cake of a sculpted Dracula lying in his sculpted coffin. (I was born around Halloween) For another friend, born on the anniversary of the Titanic sinking, she built a sinking Titanic going down by the bows, with little screaming people visible through the portholes.
And . . . all edible.
There are all these reality shows about people doing elaborate cakes. If Nadine appeared on these shows, she’d kick everybody’s butts.
But she isn’t on TV, because she’s been working on another project. She wants to teach other folks to create elaborate sculpted cakes, or pièces montées as they’re called in the trade. And to that end she founded Silver Sun Cake Designs, where you can find the wherewithal to create cakes– or cupcakes, if you prefer— covered with medieval castles or Southwest pueblos or— well, more stuff to come, including the Eiffel Tower.
So you, too can win the admiration of your friends by putting together massively awesome edible objects, which they can admire and then stuff in their faces. And if you start throwing around terms like pièces montées, you’ll rise even higher in their estimation!
From Nadine you can buy all the stuff you need to make the cute cakes, but what if you don’t know how to work with gum paste and forms?
Nadine will teach you! Her site is loaded with free explanatory videos. So there’s no way you can fail!
What’s better than castles and food? Castles that are food!
You’ve always wanted to know how to do this, right? So now you can! Just click on the site and start your dream castle right away!
They laughed when I sat down in the kitchen. But then I began to bake…
