Holiday Tradition
by wjw on November 27, 2014
It’s a Thanksgiving tradition, apparently, for people in the UK to fill out maps of the US. Which has happened again this year.
They seem pretty good sports about it, too.
It seems a little unfair. We don’t spend our Bank Holiday Weekends trying to identify Old Jersey, Old York, and Old Hampshire.
Apparently I live in the Breaking Badlands, which is more true than the anonymous cartographer knew. Many younger people seem to think my name is “Walter White.” (I heard myself called that in a cafe the other day.)
My roommate on the Sun Dancer last spring kept calling me “Mr. White”— at least when he wasn’t calling me “dude”— so one day I told him to go down to the engine room and spend all night cleaning it, and then we’d put on our scuba gear next morning and cook.
And speaking of cooking, please have a delightful Thanksgiving, whether you live in Middle Carolina, Palinaska, or Other Georgia.

If anyone asks, I can now say I live in southwest BumbleFuck. It doesn’t get any better than that.
My favorite is Oven Glove Land. I saw one of these last year that had Okrahoma.
Actually, a substantial minority seems to place you in New Meth-ico.
Hey, at least you can have fun marking up a US map. Not like Canada, where your options are “Frenchmen”, “snow”, “biting flies”, and “meece.”
Let’s not forget “hungry polar bears.”
I’m in the land of “One of these is Michiean”. But though we laugh at their efforts, at least they are making one. I could not name the states of Brazil or even Mexico, or be sure that I marked Austrailia up correctly.
Florida seems to be the one most people get right. It’s not a good sign that people in a foreign country are so familiar with Florida and most likely think it’s representative of the United States.
“It’s not a good sign that people in a foreign country are so familiar with Florida and most likely think it’s representative of the United States.”
Surely, California and New York are most representative of the United States ?
Anyway, as a citizen of the UK, I have to confess that I am not familiar with this tradition. I will have to look into it next year!
Dave, you can fill out a map of the U.S. any time you want! We don’t care!
