Fantasy Casting
by wjw on July 15, 2014
Since I’m still up the mountain at Toolbox, I keep trying ways to make you do my blogging work for me. So here’s the latest!
If you were making a movie out of my Dagmar books, who would you cast?
Bear in mind that I didn’t describe many of the central characters. Dagmar is in her thirties and has prematurely gray hair, and that’s the only description I ever gave. She could be practically any ethnicity. Who should play her?
Helmuth is blond and Germanic. Richard the Assassin is young and olive-skinned. Lincoln is in his sixties, has white hair, “a large, noble head,” and Elvis glasses. And Sean Makin, well, probably needs prosthetics.
And then there are all those other people.
What’s your dream cast?

Next post: Plot Array
I always imagind Dagmar as looking like Tamsin Greig (Episodes, Love Soup, Green Wing), but she’s probably too old for the part.
Haven’t gotten to the Dagmar books yet. (This Is Not A Game is casting me an accusing look from the TBR stack on the other side of the room.)
I keep hoping HBO or someone similar decides to pick up the Praxis books for media development.
I always pictured her as a sort of Jodi Foster character: competent, no-nonsense, intelligent, but with a hint of vulnerability.
Sadly, I think more of a Jodi Foster of 10-15 years ago (although she continues to look very good!)

The middle contestant is Dagmar. As it turns out, she’s a programmer now, but not for a game company.
Here goes:
Dagmar = Emilia Uutinen , Noomi Rapace, possibly Hilary Swank
Lincoln – Sean Penn or Pierce Brosnan, maybe Bill Nighy
Sean Makin – James Van Der Beek or a younger Quentin Tarentino. They both have the forehead going on already.
Helmuth – a younger Brad Pitt, Alexander Skarsgard, or Josh Holloway
Richard the Assassin – Adrian Brody, Diego Luna, or Jesus Luz
Additional:
Joe Clever – Sean Tillman (aka Har Mar Superstar)
Lincoln – donald sutherland or matthew frewer
Richard the Assassin – alessandro juliani or thomas dekker
Dagmar – amanda tapping or lena headey
For Sean Makin, it can only be Justin Bieber. Sean Penn is self-centered enough but too old already.
Sterling Hayden for Lincoln. Sorry, you do have zombie novels out somewhere, don’t you?
And what’s this about a new Sean Makin story??
There is a new Sean Makin story in the anthology “Rogues,” edited by George RR Martin and Gardner Dozois.
I’d be all for Sterling Hayden as Lincoln, but alas Mr. Hayden is as dead as Mr. Lincoln.
