So here’s a possible cover for my upcoming story “Video Star.” I looked long and hard, but failed to come up with any stock art that came close to illustrating the story. Short fiction doesn’t make enough money to justify commissioning a custom piece of art. So I was left with a standard SF landscape of some kind, or a picture of some guy with a TV for a head, or maybe . . . this.
I also have a version without the Ralph Steadman splotches.
So what do you think?
It doesn’t say “video” to me. It looks like an imitation of a film strip receiving a cigarette burn. To me, the red, the burn and the Ralph Steadman splotches imply speed (or film again), violence, and death. Also, the very young-looking female silhouette, implies (to my VCR-era brain) a story about a porn video star. I do like the clarity of the simple colors. Very attention-grabbing.
The above is my impression without knowing the context of the story. If any of that is in the story, keep it. Otherwise, keep searching.
Hey, put a television frame around cyber femme and voila: le video.
Thumbs up to splotches, type and Ralph Steadman. It does look very ’80s. Is that what you were going for?
Peter, that television/monitor frame is a good idea to imply video, though it might make the simple colors less arresting. Perhaps a plain black silhouette or outline?
It looks like a screenshot from “The Abyss”.
