Friend of the blog Dave Bishop, in response to my early post about Big Joe Turner, posted a reminiscence about seeing Sister Rosetta Tharpe playing a concert on a rainy railway platform in Manchester, U.K.
Another friend of the blog, Patricia Rogers, found online the video of that very concert! Here it is. Maybe we’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the young Dave Bishop somewhere in the audience.
Don’t let it be said we don’t give you fast service here in this forum.
I wish that I had been at the event, Walter! Sorry if I gave a misleading impression in my last message. At the time that this auspicious event occurred I was a teenager living on the other side of the country.
The film that you have posted has suddenly become a bit of a hit in our community and everyone who has seen it wishes, like me, that they had been there.
Sadly, the station, where the concert was staged, has long since been demolished and the line is now a cycle track. The spot where Sister Rosetta strutted her stuff, all those years ago, is now a small wood!
